Kathy Ireland Slams Abortion Monday, April 27, 2009 Former supermodel Kathy Ireland is making no secret about her opposition to abortion - a position that puts her at odds with much of Hollywood and the world's glitterati. In an interview with Fox News, Ireland described her conversion to a pro-life position. "My entire life I was pro-choice - who was I to tell another woman what she could or couldn't do with her body? But when I was 18, I became a Christian and I dove into the medical books, I dove into science," Ireland told Fox while promoting her insightful new book "Real Solutions for Busy Mom: Your Guide to Success and Sanity." "What I read was astounding and I learned that at the moment of conception a new life comes into being," Ireland told Fox. "The complete genetic blueprint is there, the DNA is determined, the blood type is determined, the sex is determined, the unique set of fingerprints that nobody has had or ever will have is already there." However Ireland admitted that she did everything she could to avoid becoming a believer in pro-life. "I called Planned Parenthood and begged them to give me their best argument and all they could come up with that it is really just a clump of cells and if you get it early enough it doesn't even look like a baby,"Ireland said. "Well, we're all clumps of cells and the unborn does not look like a baby the same way the baby does not look like a teenager, a teenager does not look like a senior citizen. That unborn baby looks exactly the way human beings are supposed to look at that stage of development. It doesn't suddenly become a human being at a certain point in time," Ireland argued. "I've also asked leading scientists across our country to please show me some shred of evidence that the unborn is not a human being. I didn't want to be pro-life, but this is not a woman's rights issue but a human rights issue." From NewsMax

On this day in 1954, the Salk polio vaccine field trials, involving 1.8 million children, begin at the Franklin Sherman Elementary School in McLean, Virginia. Children in the United States, Canada and Finland participated in the trials, which used for the first time the now-standard double-blind method, whereby neither the patient nor attending doctor knew if the inoculation was the vaccine or a placebo. On April 12, 1955, researchers announced the vaccine was safe and effective and it quickly became a standard part of childhood immunizations in America. In the ensuing decades, polio vaccines would all but wipe out the highly contagious disease in the Western Hemisphere.

Did you know? * Today 27 million people worldwide are slaves, over 8 million of them are children, with the largest numbers in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. * 1.8 million of these children are forced into prostitution or pornography, with the largest numbers in India, Brazil, Thailand, and the Philippines. * Each year 1.2 million more children are forced into slavery. That's over 3,000 per day. * The average age of a girl forced into sexual slavery is 13; girls as young as 5 are sold into sexual slavery and forced to work in brothels. * A girl in a brothel is forced to have sex with as many as 20 customers a night. * Child slaves are often forced to work up to 15 hours a day, in prostitution, agriculture, domestic servitude, mines, rice mills, brick kilns, factories, rock quarries, and as soldiers. * In some cases a mere $100 can save a child from slavery.

Through the kids’ pages, we encourage children who are being sexually abused to choose an adult in their life who they trust, and to tell that adult about the abuse. We believe we are the first organization in the United States to create and disseminate public awareness campaigns directly aimed at children who are being sexually abused. Through the adult pages of the website we help to educate the adult the child discloses to so that they will better understand what to do to help that child.
